Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

What to TEST

Any mains-powered electrical appliance with a flexible cable and plug requires PAT testing. This applies to items provided in rented properties and workplaces to ensure they are safe. Items that do not need PAT testing include battery-operated devices and brand-new equipment from reputable retailers.

Examples of some appliances that require testing are:-

• Kitchen appliances: Kettles, microwaves, toasters, fridges, dishwashers.
• Office equipment: PCs, laptops, monitors, printers, photocopiers.
• Tools: Power tools, such as drills and sanders.
• Domestic items: Lamps, TVs, sound systems, vacuum cleaners.
• Fixed appliances: Some fixed appliances like integrated ovens or towel rails may also need testing

When to TEST

Who should TEST

PAT testing must be performed by a "competent" person.
That person should be able to demonstrate :-

• Knowledge: A good understanding of electricity and the potential hazards involved in working with electronic equipment.
• Experience: Practical experience with electrical systems and the specific equipment being tested.
• Skills: The ability to operate the necessary test equipment correctly and interpret the test results accurately.
• Risk Awareness: The capacity to recognize conditions that could make it unsafe to work on electrical equipment and to take appropriate precautions.

Training:

Completing a PAT testing course provided by a qualified instructor/college is strongly recommended to demonstrate competence.

TEST Records

It is imperative that details of all appliance testing is recorderd, this needs to be for both formal visual inspection as well as any physical testing that has taken place. The following information should be detailed.

Description of the appliance and its ID no.

Where it is located

What Class of aplliance it is

Visual Inspection details

Physical Test results (if applicable)

Who tested it

When Tested / When next test due

Pass / Fail

Any other relevant comments.
